The history of the Department of Telecommunications Systems dates back to the day when Odessa Institute of Communication Engineers was founded and departments of Telephone and Telegraph Communication and Radio Communication were organized in 1930. After the Great Patriotic War it was the Department of Telephone and Telegraph Communication and in the beginning of 60s – the Department of Automated Multichannel Communication.

In 1967 the Department of Automated Multichannel Communication was reorganized into two departments – of Multichannel Communication and Automated Communication.

The Department of Multichannel Communication had been preparing specialists to develop and operate multichannel communication systems and to design communication lines. In 1988 the Department of Multichannel Communication was called the Department of Multichannel Transmission Systems.

Due to the fast development of modern telecommunication systems in 2001 the name of the department was changed once more into the Department of Telecommunication Systems and by now the department has preserved this name.

Many outstanding scientists who worked at the department contributed greatly to the development of mulichannel communication. Among them there are M.O. Marchenko, L.I. Yaroslavskyi, I.P. Panfilov, A.V. Kysil, O.Yu. Lev, P.Ya. Nudelman, L.M. Rahovych, V.O. Balashov, Yu.A. Pavlichenko, V.O. Breskin, Yu.V. Shevchenko, V.M. Zakharov, T.V. Makarov.

In different periods the following Associate Professors were Deans of the department: M.K.Khromykh, Yu.A.Pavlychenko, Yu.F.Fleyta, A.L.Otlyvanskyi, O.V.Onatskyi.

After the department restructuring the Academic Board of the Academy elected an Associate Professor of the Department of Computing Technology and Microprocessors Khikhlovska Iryna Vilgelmivna the Dean of the department.

The department provides Bachelor full-time and correspondence courses for students majoring in Telecommunications and Master courses on Telecommunications Systems and Networks. There about 2000 students studying at the department at the moment.

Worldwide modern multiservice network designed to transmit data, voice and video is the result of different technologies convergence – packet switching, multiplexing, simultaneous transmission of heterogeneous traffic with the application of new methods of high quality service provision. This network consists of two elements – information and communication ones – and is called an infocommunication network.

Specialists in telecommunicationssystems and networks investigate transport problems of the network, fiber-optic communication channels, switching equipment, switching units, multiplexers, routers etc. which are controlled by computers and microprocessor systems. They solve problems connected with traffic transfer, identification of communication channel and switching equipment capacity. The other component of an infocommunication network – an information network – is non-existent without telecommunicationssystems and networks. Specialists in the domain of information networks concentrate on implementation of new information technology in order to provide customers with information services.

The structure of the department is represented by 5 Chairs: Telecommunication Systems Chair, Chair of Fibre-Optic Communication Lines, Basics of Circuit Design Chair and ones of Communication Networks Software and Higher Mathematics.

There are 9 professors, 29 associate professors, 2 laureates of State Award on Science and Technology of 2002 and 2 academicians of the International Academy of Informatization working at the department.

The results of research held out at the Department of Telecommunications Systems are applied in the process of development and implementation of the newest high-tech telecommunications technology and to produce cables of an excellent quality. For these achievements professor O.V. Bondarenko receivedState Award in Science and Technology.

For the recent 5 years professors and lecturers of the department have published several textbooks, 4 monographs and have made contributions to ITU-T standards.

Research work and monographs of the department professors and lecturers are well-known not only in Ukraine, but also in the USA, Japan etc.

Overall 60 theses have been defended at the department.

Graduates of the department use the knowledge acquired while studying to design, build and operate telecommunication transport networks, digital telecommunication systems of transmission along metal, fibre-optic, radio-relay and satellite lines and systems of network access.

Students of the Department of Telecommunications Systems major in multichannel telecommunication, fibre-optic transmission systems and information security in telecommunications systems.

Bachelor’s course includes profound studies on Mathematics, Physics, Telecommunication Theory, Computer Science, Microprocessors and Computing Technology, Programming, Basics of Circuit Technology, Principles of Fibre-Optic, Radio-Relay and Satellite Transmission Systems Design, Information Security, Economics of Telecommunications and other subjects selected both by the Academy and students.

Students that major in multichannel telecommunications and fibre-optic transmission systems get specialized knowledge and skills on Multichannel Telecommunication Systems and Networks, Fibre-Optic Transmission Systems Design and Operation, Telecommunication Enterprise Management and Marketing.

Students that major in information security in telecommunication systems acquire basic knowledge and skills in Cryptography, Basics of Cryptology, Methods and Ways of Information Protection in Data Transmission Networks, Information Security Systems Design and Operation, Telecommunication Enterprise Management and Marketing.

Theoretical knowledge is checked and balanced by the experience of laboratory work and practical training programmes at telecommunication enterprises.

2nd-year students constantly do practical training programmes on the premises of the training centre for workers of OJSC Ukrtelecom where they study theory and upgrade their practical skills. During the two weeks of theoretical knowledge acquisition and practical laboratory experience they raise their proficiency in telecommunications. The practical training programme includes developing skills of a personal computer and measuring equipment user, learning new information services offered by the enterprise and the newest technology in the field of linear cable constructions building. In the end of the practical training programme students receive the certificate of a welder and a cableman of the 3rd category.

Computer technology is a key tool for students to acquire new knowledge and skills at the department. In computer classrooms students complete their course projects, diploma projects and laboratory works on various subjects, including solving tasks on optimization and modeling of telecommunication systems and their nods. In 2002 at the exhibition of the Ministry of Education of Ukraine an inter-department computer complex created by Basics of Circuit DesignChair was awarded a diploma.

Laboratories of Telecommunication Systems Chair and Chairof Fibre-Optic Communication Lines have recently been equipped with modern digital systems, fibre-optic communication lines which makes it possible for students to carry out laboratory works and research in these laboratories.

Outstanding students of the department receive scholarships from joint-stock company Ukrtelecom, U’tel, closed joint-stock company Kyivstar GSM, ONAT, MKM Telecom, Farlep etc.

Students of the department under scientific supervision of the specialists of the Academy succeed in research work, presenting their results at various conferences of young scientists. Students of the Department of Telecommunication Systems take part in national students Olympiads and win prizes.

Graduate students attend telecommunication enterprises of the city to get acquainted with the work of specialists in the field of telecommunication systems. For instance, students attend the International Shore Station Italy-Turkey-Ukraine-Russia, operated by the graduates of the department.

Graduates of the department work for the enterprises of the telecommunication branch such as Ukrtelecom, private companies, telecommunication providers etc.

The department provides distance learning for Ukrainian and foreign students. The Dean of the department I.V.Khikhlovska, assistant professorof Theory of Telecommunication Chair M.O.Ishchenko and associate professor of Theory of Telecommunication Chair M.F.Ivanov are in charge of distance learning. Associate professor of CNA Chair Yu.P.Chornyi is in charge of full-time education and stimulates implementation of new technologies in the process of the knowledge acquisition. Assistant Professor of Higher Mathematics Chair                   T.P.Vasylevska is the coordinator of character-building work at the department and organizes activities for students to build and develop civic values, dignity, tolerance in relationship, internationalism, sense of responsibility in day-to-day duty etc.

A.R.Sikora, S.V.Kolomiychuk, I.Yu.Zablotska, I.F.Bratanchuk and  O.M.Kryvoruchek are responsible for procedural activities and paperwork at the faculty.
