The Department of mathematics

In 1930, after the reform of the electrical engineering faculty of the Odessa Polytechnic Institute into Odessa Institute of Communications Engineers, all 302 student of the 1st-4th courses of the electrical engineering faculty and part of the staff of the Odessa Polytechnic Institute were transferred to the Odessa Electrotechnical Institute of Communications. Basing on the order from 23.09.30, in OEIC were established six departments, one of which was the General Engineering Department. It carried out training of students on higher mathematics, physics, chemistry, mechanics, materials technology, strength of materials, machine parts, technical drawing. The head of this Department was Professor Sikorski Yuriy S. (1879 – 1953), which he successfully led until 1948.

Sikorski J. S. was not only a talented lecturer, but also a famous scientist. Research interests were in the field of analytical mechanics. Two of his monographs were devoted to the use of differential equations and elliptic functions in problems of mechanics and technology.

From the first years of its existence, the Technical Department started active work on mathematical training of students. In addition to traditional classes in mathematics, from April 1931 for the first year students created an adjustable band in mathematics, and in March 1931 under the guidance of Professor Yu. S. Sikorsky began to work seminar in mathematics (2 hours per decade), which was attended by third year students.

Over time, the technical Department was reorganized and its name was changed to physics and mathematics. The new Department taught the following subjects: “Mathematics”, “Physics”, “Chemistry”, “Materials Technology”. In the early 40-ies. the Department was divided into the Department of Mathematics and Department of Physics.

The second head of Department was assoc. professor D. P. Milman (1950 – 1960).An important contribution to the development of science made his work “The theory of regular convex sets in functional spaces”.

Professor Rutman M.A. was the head of department in 1968 – 1972. The significant mathematical results of this scientist concerned investigation of bases in Banach space and were obtained jointly with the famous Ukrainian mathematiciam M.G. Krein.

Since 1972, the head of the higer mathematics department becomes assoc. professor G. V. Poddubny, who published the textbook “Mathematical analysis for radio engineers”jointly with M. G. Romanovsky .

In 1976 the department was divided into two – Higher and Applied Mathematics, the first of which was headed by Associate Professor Kalmushevsky I.I. who headed the department until 2001.

At the same time at the Department,  the famous scientist Sakhnovich L. A. worked. His scientific interests concerned  the theory of integral equations with a difference kernel on a finite interval. Sakhnovich LA also initiated the creation of a scientific seminar at the Department, which worked under his leadership more than 30 years beginning from 1964. The topics dealt with the generalized wave operators, integral equations, the inverse scattering problems.

In 2001 – 2003 years,  Department of Mathematics was headed by Professor V. M. Plotnikov, Doctor of Technical Sciences, corresponding member of the Ukrainian Academy of Communications and International Informatization Academy, author of more than 50 works on a discrete representation for functions of multidimensional communications signal. His research interests included algebraic systems, the theory of lattice structures, sampling on the display of the signal processing problems.

From 2003 to 2010, the  Higher Mathematics Department was headed by the candidate of physical and mathematical sciences Buslaev A. G., the author of 30 scientific and methodical works. His research interests related to the integral equations and operator factorization of  in the class of generalized functions.

Since 2011, the head of higher mathematics department is the candidate of physical and mathematical sciences, associate professor I. Yu. Dmitrieva. Scientific interests concern complex analysis of several variables, the field theory, mathematical physics, technical electrodynamics. The author of more than 120 scientific papers, including publications in the indexed editions of USA, Germany and Romania.

Currently, the Department is the part of the Educational-Scientific Institute “Infocommunications and Software Engineering”.

The Department conducts annual olympiads  in mathematics among the students of the Academy. The winners take part in the national competitions organized for the students of technical universities. Under the guidance of teachers of the Department, the  students are engaged into scientific work and take part in student scientific conferences.
